8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts

Concepts and Skills

In order to be successful at this standard what do students need to know?

¥  What do the Òother artsÓ and Òdisciplines outside the artsÓ include?

              "Other arts"

                          dance

                          visual art

                                      sculpture

                                      painting

                                      video art

                          theater

                                      stage

                                      TV

                                      movies

              Disciplines outside the arts

                          literature

                                      poetry

                                      prose

                                      creative writing

                          science

                          philosophy

                          math

                          technology

¥  How the arts evoke feelings and emotion from the observer.

¥  How the creative processes of music are similar/different to the other arts

¥  How direction in music and the other arts is similar/different

¥  How the relationship between music and the other arts is symbiotic, and how the relationship between ALL of the other arts is symbiotic.

¥  How is music related to subjects outside the arts?

Does music interplay with science? Math? History? etc.

In what ways does music interplay with other non-arts subjects

Activities

What kind of activities should students be able to do to complete this standard? (How will you teach it?)

Daily/Weekly

¥  Identify any elements of music being played that relates to other arts

Is the music related to a dance form (a minuet, for example)

Is it based on literature (a poem or story)?

¥  Rehearse pieces are used to enhance other art forms

              Ballet

              Opera accompaniment

              Music played on Broadway

              Movie soundtracks

¥  Identify music that links directly to artistic movements

              Impressionism

              Romanticism

              Renaissance

              Baroque

              etc.

¥  Observe live/watch on video the other arts to see when music is utilized to enhance the art being observed.

¥  Discuss aspects of motion in rhythm/timing

¥  Describe music in non-musical terms

Projects (Deeper Learning)

¥  Have students research a specific art form or discipline and find a piece of music that relates to it

¥  View presentations of artistic movements which encompass each of the four fine arts (ie, impressionism)

¥  Build a functioning speaker from homemade materials

¥  Engineer a recording of a classmateÕs band/chamber ensemble

¥  Participate in marching band

¥  Physics:

Describe the physical basis of tone production for:

                          strings

                          winds

                                      brass

                                      woodwonds

                          percussion

                          electronic instruments

                          the human voice

How viscosity of instrumental lubricants & friction from rosin affect playing

¥  Math:

Why is proper intonation so integral to playing?

Why is bad intonation so detrimental?

The concept of the fundamental pitch and the overtone series

¥  Language Arts

Compare the ability of music and literature to convey images, feelings, and meanings.

¥  Listen to and discuss TV/Movie/Video Game Soundtracks

¥  Participate as a small ensemble providing live music at an event

              art showing

              dance recital

¥  Identify the elements of a particular discipline: compare and contrast these elements with the five elements of music

              Examples:

Elements of Music: Form, Harmony, Rhythm, Melody, Timbre

Elements of Dance: movement, time, space, energy, body

Elements of Theater: plot, character, idea, language, music, spectacle

How are the elements of each art intertwined?

How does music enhance non-musical arts?
