Course Content (Syllabus)



During the winter semester 2012 - 2013, we will deal with representative philosophers of Modern and Contemporary European philosophy included in enlightenment, in empiricism and German idealism and their influences. This course will build on the approved manuals of the Department of Philosophy enriched with extensive bibliography, notes and original philosophical texts. Particular reference will be made to the particular philosophical works, like Essay Concerning Human Understanding by J. Locke , Three Dialogues of Hylas and Philonous by G. Berkeley et al.

Along with lectures of the main course there will be conducted an interactive seminar based on two selected original texts: Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts by K. Marx (German Dep.) and The Birth of Tragedy by F.Nietzsche (Spanish Dep.).

Assessment Methods / Exams



Ability to be exempted from the written exam of the semester is given to those who choose optional subject for writing a paper and working in collaboration with the instructor. The paper size is expected to be of  about 15 to 20 pages, and guided discussion in classroom and individual meeting with the instructor. Delivered one month before the exam period in order to get a mark and know promptly if the student needs to register for written exams.

For tutorials and  individual work, A. Lazou is available every Mon and Wed. from 1 - 3 pm, room 509 at her office, 5th floor of the University Campus.
