() - Ευφροσύνη Φράγκου (Effrossyni Fragkou)
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
Medical Interpreting, also known as healthcare interpreting, is a rising field of community interpreting as the complexity of human interaction creates new conditions of interlingual and intersemioti communication. This is due to a number of factors, namely:
- advances in medical science;
- easier access to healthcare services and sources of medical information;
- constant population mobility; and,
- legal and ethical requirements for a seamless and equal access to healthcare services of high quality.
Consequently, medical interpreting, either oral (verbal) or signed (sign language), constantly attracts scholarly attention for the theoretical and practical aspects of the field. Additionally, and even more importantly, medical interpretation becomes an issue of pivotal importance and primary concerns for those who use its services, be them patients or healthcare professionals.
During this course, Medical Interpreting will be examined from three different points of view.
The first standpoint offers a historical overview of interpreting practices (from ad hoc and conference interpreting to present day conditions [scientific and legal], which draw attention to issues of boundaries and standardization).
The second standpoint highlights necessary special skills and abilities that a healthcare interpreter must have, modes of interpretation, types of encounters, fields and loci of medical interpreting application, through a critical awareness of contexts and aspects of interpretation such as:
- bilingualism (and the relationship between languages “A”, “B” and “C”)
- bi-directional interpreting
- consecutive interpretation
- whispering interpretation
- simultaneous interpretation
- note-taking
- sight translation, and
- remote interpreting
The third standpoint relates to initiating students into interpreting practice, by combining their practical experiences with fundamental aspects of the cognitive, communicative, mediating, linguistic/interpretative, inter-linguistic/-cultural, intra-semiotic function of medical interpreting. Emphasis is given to the sociological turn in interpreting studies and to the relation between translation and interpreting.
The course comprises lectures and practical applications. It focuses on the interaction and demands of critical dialogue and synthetical thought. Assessment methods include oral presentations and written research papers.
