Cyber bullying of women in the sports industry-Co-funded PhD scholarship opportunity

Co-funded PhD scholarship opportunity: international applicants= welcomed (international students should plan to spend at least 1 year in Canberra, Australia).

Online trolling and e-safety: Women athletes and women working in the sports industry

Co-funded by the University of Canberra and Sport Integrity Australia, the project will support a PhD scholar to complete a doctoral research program that will seek to identify mechanisms to reduce the insidious and increasing levels of toxic abuse online and cyber hate directed at women involved in the sport industry. In this project, we broadly define cyberbullying as hurtful messages that are threatening, humiliating, or intimidating to individuals. Cyber-hate and trolling are specific types of cyberbullying that are often experienced by women in sport, and more prevalent against women of colour and women with a disability.

We seek to undertake research which seeks to understands the nature and impact of online harm such as cyber-hate and trolling upon elite female athletes. The research will also canvass and make recommendations for change. The negative impact of cyber-hate and trolling upon women in other industries has been identified as a barrier to entry and retention. We believe solution focused research in sport is transferable to other industries and will have a significant impact in progressing gender equity.

Brief description of the candidate required

Masters (or Undergraduate qualifications with Honours) in any of the related fields: media/journalism; law; psychology; sociology; cyber security; criminology and policing
Experience in/ knowledge of sport desirable.
Excellent problem-solving, strategic thinking and analytical skills.

Project objectives

The research will build on the limited literature examining a range of possible solutions:

Collecting data on the extent and nature of cyber bullying of women in the sports industry
Examining the existing criminal legal framework to determine effectiveness to hold offenders and social media/ website platforms accountable for causing reasonable foreseeable harm to victims of cyber bullying
Assessing prevention strategies for the sport cyber-bullying space
Strategies to minimise the impact of cyberbullying through education and counselling

PhD to begin: February 2023

Domestic and international applicants welcomed: international students should plan to spend at least 1 year in Canberra, Australia.

Scholarship Amount

The three-year full-time scholarship is $90,000 (AUD) ($30,000 (AUD) per year). The stipend is not indexed annually and will remain as $30,000 (AUD) each year
The scholarship is tax-free for full-time candidates
The scholarship is paid fortnightly to the candidate through the University of Canberra Finance area

Eligibility

You must:

Have completed a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of attainment;
Be enrolled, or seeking to enrol, as a full-time candidate in a PhD at the University of Canberra; and
Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen; or an Australian permanent resident; or an international student eligible to study in Australia on an international student visa.

Scholarship Selection

Selection of the scholarship candidate will be undertaken on the basis of academic merit and research potential, by a selection panel and approved by the Faculty of Health;
A scholarship will not be awarded if there is no candidate of sufficient merit; and
The selection panel may request an interview process should there be more than one suitable candidate.

BRAZIL ANNOUNCES EQUAL PAY ON NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAMS

Brazil’s football federation announced on Wednesday it will pay men and women the same amount for representing the national team, one of the few countries to make such a pledge.

“The CBF has equalled the prize money and allowances between men’s and women’s football, which means the women players will earn the same as the men,” said the federation’s president Rogerio Caboclo.

It means Brazil’s little known female players such as Marta, Formiga and Leticia Santos will receive the same fees and allowances as global superstars such as Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino

Australia, Norway and New Zealand are amongst the nations to previously decide to pay their men and women internationals the same amount.

In March 2019, the US women’s team, the current world champions, sued their federation alledging discrimination over pay and conditions.

A judge dismissed their case in May this year but the team appealed.

Brazil’s football association CBF said its decision was communicated to the women’s team and their Swedish coach Pia Sundhage in March.

“This is historic. Being a part of this is very special, I’m very grateful,” said Sundhage, who also welcomed the news that for the first time a woman, Duda Luizelli, has been put in charge of co-ordinating the national women’s team.

Equal pay was first applied back in March when Brazil took part in the invitational Tournoi de France, finishing last out of four sides.

The measure will be applied to the national teams participating in the Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo next year, as well as the next men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments.

“It will be proportionally the same as what FIFA proposes for women, that is to say, there will be no more gender difference in remuneration between men and women,” said Caboclo, the federation president.

The men’s team is the most successful in football having won the World Cup a record five times.

They have also won their continental championship, the Copa America, nine times, most recently on home soil in 2019.

But the women’s team is also amongst the strongest in the game, having reached the World Cup final in 2007 and back-to-back Olympic finals in 2004 and 2008.

The CBF said later in a statement that equal pay was “part of the journey of transformation” towards equality in football, the most popular sport in the country, which has 36 professional clubs.

Last year, the Brazilian professional league also authorized equal prize money for women and men.

However, when it comes to club football, the gap in pay between men and women, not just in Brazil but all over the world, remains huge.

The highest paid players in the women’s game earn six-figure salaries, while male players such as Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus take home sums more than 100 times greater.

The CIGEPS extraordinary session was held at the UN headquarters in Geneva, on 28th and 29th March 2019. There were three main areas of focus: (i) revision of the statutes of CIGEPS, (ii) follow-up and implementation of the Kazan Action Plan (KAP), adopted at the Sixth International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VI) and (iii) aligning the UN Action Plan on Sport for Development and Peace with the KAP.

Action 4 of the KAP was a call to member nations for conducting a feasibility study on the establishment of a Global Observatory for Women, Sport, Physical Education and Physical Activity in alignment with its mission of promoting the empowerment of women and girls in and through sport as fundamental components of national and international sport policy which are seen as crucial factors for good governance, and for maximizing the contribution of sport to sustainable development and peace. The State of Switzerland pledged to provide the necessary resources for achieving Action 4, thus providing new impetus to achieving the goal of gender equality in and through sport.

It is a memorable moment in the history of women and sport and a great support to the KAP by Switzerland. The Swiss commitment should be upheld by other member states in order to maximize the potential of sport to interconnect with the SDGs through the future work of the Global Observatory and facilitate the achievement of the equality goals set out in Agenda 2030.

The Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) was established in 1978 to promote the role and value of sport and its inclusion in public policy. CIGEPS is comprised of expert representatives in the field of physical education and sport from 18 UNESCO Member States, each elected for a four-year term. The Permanent Consultative Council (PCC), comprising key sport federations, UN agencies and NGOs, provides technical support and advice to the Committee.

The sixth International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is now
only four days away! Happening on 6 April, it is the perfect
opportunity to celebrate your work and the role of sport in addressing
social challenges worldwide.

One way to get involved is to take part in our video challenge, which
highlights the role of sport in crossing linguistic, cultural and
national boundaries. All you need to do is to film yourself saying “Sport
is a universal language” in your own language and share a written message
on sport’s role in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Women travelers of the 18th and 19th centuries are shocked, disgusted ad outraged by the motions of the human body in the harems. This study, exclusively for firsthand female accounts, examines the position and roles of the harem entertainers: dancers, acrobats, pantomimes, musicians and singers, who were all female islamized slaves that belonged to the harem's elite slavery system. The women who cultivated music an dance were islamized slaves whose talents were recognized as children and who were trained to use their artistic abilities to amuse, entertaine and distract their owners/masters/mistresses. They were not taught to dance, perform acrobatics, sing and play musical instruments for their own personal pleasure, diversion, amusement or self-expression, but solely for the pleasure of their socially superiors: their owners/masters, the women belonging the harem's higher pyramidical hierarchy (eg. the valide sultan/the sultan's mother, the princesses (the sultans' daughters and sisters, etc.) . Dance, acrobatics and any form of physical movement, activity, exercise and manual labor were symbols of social inferiority for the Ottoman Turks.

Στην εργασία αυτή εξετάζονται οι μαρτυρίες έγκλειστων εξισλαμισμένων γυναικών στα Οθωμανικά χαρέμια όπως αυτές καταγράφηκαν από δυτικές περιηγήτριες του 18^ου και του 19^ου αιώνα, στη Μικρά Ασία, στην Ελλάδα, στην Κύπρο, στην Αίγυπτο και σε άλλες κατεχόμενες περιοχές της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας. Καταδεικνύεται ότι το υπερβολικό πάχος, η ακινησία και η έλλειψη χάρης στο ανάστημα και στην κίνηση και για τα δύο φύλα, αντανακλούσαν το ατομικό κοινωνικό καθεστώς και θεωρούνταν κοινωνικά ‘προνόμια’ που ανήκαν μόνο στις υψηλότερες τάξεις των Μουσουλμάνων. Ο χορός, η παντομίμα, η τέχνη της ακροβασίας, η φυσική δραστηριότητα και γενικά οποιοδήποτε μορφή καλλιτεχνικής ή σωματικής έκφρασης, κίνησης, ενέργειας ή εκγύμνασης, ήταν όλα σύμβολα κοινωνικής κατωτερότητας. Οι δραστηριότητες αυτές θεωρούνταν ασχολίες, ή εργασίες που ενέπιπταν στην αρμοδιότητα των εξισλαμισμένων σκλάβων, δηλαδή των πρώην μη-μουσουλμάνων που είχαν βίαια ή ‘ομαλά’ εξισλαμισθεί, καθώς και των υπόδουλων/υποτελών λαών, όπως των Ελλήνων, των Αρμενίων, των Εβραίων και των Τσιγγάνων.

Κατά την διερευνητική μας διείσδυση στην Οθωμανική κοινωνία και στην καθημερινή ζωή των Οθωμανών Τούρκων του 18^ου και του 19^ου αιώνα, γίνεται φανερό ότι δεν υφίσταται κινητικός πολιτισμός ή κινητική κουλτούρα, όπως αυτή γίνεται αντιληπτή στην Δύση. Διαπιστώνουμε ότι καταδικάζεται και στιγματίζεται κοινωνικά οποιαδήποτε μορφή κινητικής έκφρασης, όπως ο χορός, οποιαδήποτε μορφή κινητικής δραστηριότητας, εξάσκησης ή εκγύμνασης, ακόμα και το βάδισμα. Τα πρότυπα ήταν τελείως διαφορετικά. Η μαλθακότητα, η ακινησία, η απραξία, η αδράνεια, η νωθρότητα, η οκνηρία, και ιδιαίτερα το υπερβολικό πάχος, εθεωρούντο κοινωνικά προνόμια και αποτελούσαν στοιχεία προσδιορισμού της κοινωνικής θέσης των Οθωμανών Τούρκων. Σε αντίθεση με την Δύση όπου οι οποιεσδήποτε κινητικές δραστηριότητες, πέραν της εργασίας, κατά κάποιο τρόπο οι εξειδικευμένες μορφές κινητικού πολιτισμού, κινητικής κουλτούρας ταυτίστηκαν, μάλιστα, υπήρξαν προνόμια της άρχουσας τάξης, στην Οθωμανική κοινωνία, όλες οι αντίστοιχες κινητικές δραστηριότητες και εκφράσεις εθεωρούντο, και κυριολεκτικά ήταν, υποχρεώσεις και αρμοδιότητες των εξισλαμισμένων σκλάβων, και των μη-μουσουλμάνων υποτελών λαών. Η σωματική δραστηριότητα, ακόμα και η πιο απλή κίνηση, όπως το βάδισμα, εθεωρείτο στοιχείο και συνήθεια που εκπροσωπούσε τις ‘μη-προνομιούχες’ τάξεις των Οθωμανών, και μία απόδειξη ότι δεν είχαν εξισλαμισμένους σκλάβους ή εξισλαμισμένες σκλάβες να τους υπηρετούν καθώς και μία ένδειξη ότι δεν μπορούσαν ή δεν είχαν την οικονομική δυνατότητα να προσλάβουν υποτελείς μη-μουσουλμάνους για τις οικιακές και τις εξωτερικές εργασίες ή για την ψυχαγωγία τους. Διαπιστώσαμε ότι ουδεμία επιρροή δεν δέχθηκε η Οθωμανική επικράτεια, τουλάχιστον στα επίπεδα του κινητικού πολιτισμού, από τις ευρωπαϊκές αντιλήψεις περί κινητικής κουλτούρας. Αναφερόμαστε φυσικά πάντα σε θεσμικές διαστάσεις. Εξαίρεση αποτελούν οι θρησκευτικοί χοροί των Δερβίσηδων, οι πολεμικές τεχνικές/τέχνες των Οθωμανών, ή του Οθωμανικού θεσμού της στρατοκρατικής δουλείας, της στρατιωτικής εκπαίδευσης, κ.α. Όμως, ακόμα και εδώ η άσκηση ανήκε στην αρμοδιότητα της χαμηλότερης στρατιωτικής ιεραρχίας, όπως ήταν εκείνη της στρατοκρατικής δουλείας, δηλαδή των αρσενικών σκλάβων-δούλων, των απελευθερωμένων σκλάβων, καθώς και των ελεύθερων Μουσουλμάνων που ανήκαν στις χαμηλότερες κοινωνικο-οικονομικές ομάδες. Αρσενικοί μη-μουσουλμάνοι που είχαν υποδουλωθεί, εξανδραποδισθεί, εξισλαμισθεί και ενταχθεί στις ένοπλες δυνάμεις ή στα σώματα ασφαλείας, φυσικά γυμνάζονταν, όπως οι γενίτσαροι, οι οποίο είχαν αρπαχθεί από τους Χριστιανικούς πληθυσμούς όταν ήταν μικρά παιδιά, οι Κιρκάσιοι του Καυκάσου, και οι απελευθερωμένοι δούλοι της χαμηλότερης ιεραρχίας των ενόπλων δυνάμεων.

Στην εργασία αυτή διερευνώνται οι λόγοι που ώθησαν τις περιηγήτριες να αφιερώσουν μεγαλύτερη προσοχή ή να παρέχουν περισσότερο υλικό, στα έργα τους για το «Ελληνικό στοιχείο», συγκριτικά με άλλους υπόδουλους λαούς, οι οποίοι εντοπίζονται στον ευρύτερο ρόλο που έπαιζε στις κοινωνίες της κεντροδυτικής Ευρώπης και της Β. Αμερικής, ο απόηχος του αρχαίου Ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Οι περιγραφές και οι αφηγήσεις τους είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα, πέραν της αποστολής μη-κυβερνητικής Αγγλικής, Γαλλικής και Αμερικάνικης οικονομικής βοήθειας στον υπόδουλο Ελληνισμό, κατά την διάρκεια του Ελληνικού εθνικο-απελευθερωτικού αγώνα και των εξεγέρσεων που ακολούθησαν, να παρακινήσουν και σε προσωπικό επίπεδο γυναίκες και άνδρες, σε μεγάλους αριθμούς, να σπεύσουν για να βοηθήσουν και να συμμετάσχουν στον εθνικο-απελευθερωτικό αγώνα του Ελληνισμού. Τα έργα, τα ταξιδιωτικά χρονικά, τα προσωπικά ημερολόγια και οι επιστολές δυτικών περιηγητριών του 17^ου, 18^ου και 19^ου αιώνα, που δεν έχουν δει το φως της δημοσιότητας, σε σύγκριση με εκείνα των περιηγητών, μας προσφέρουν ένα ανεξερεύνητο, πρωτότυπο και αδημοσίευτο υλικό, και μία γυναικεία οπτική και προσέγγιση της Οσμανικής πραγματικότητας. Χιλιάδες γυναίκες[2](Καμπερίδου, 2002: Α’, Β’), Αγγλίδες, Γαλλίδες, Γερμανίδες, Σουηδέζες, Ελβετίδες, Αυστριακές και Αμερικανίδες περιηγήθηκαν, εξερεύνησαν, επισκέφτηκαν, φιλοξενήθηκαν, έζησαν ως μόνιμοι κάτοικοι, υπηρέτησαν ή εργάστηκαν ως εθελόντριες, ως ιεραπόστολοι, ως εκπαιδευτικοί, ως νοσοκόμες, ως ζωγράφοι, ως γκουβερνάντες, ως καμαριέρες, ως υπηρέτριες ή ως συνοδοί γυναικών της δυτικής ελίτ και της Οθωμανικής ελίτ, σε κατεχόμενες από τον τουρκικό ζυγό περιοχές που εθεωρούντο, κατά τις μαρτυρίες τους, βάρβαρες και επικίνδυνες για το γυναικείο φύλο, όπως η Μικρά Ασία, ο Πόντος, η Κύπρος, η Ελλάδα, κ.α.

Σε αυτήν την έρευνα το ενδιαφέρον εστιάζεται στις μαρτυρίες της Αγγλίδας περιηγήτριας Annie Jane Harvey, η οποία περιγράφει την «χορευτική μανία» των Ελλήνων της Σινώπης του Πόντου το 1870. Σε αντίθεση με το χορό των Μουσουλμάνων, δηλαδή των έγκλειστων εξισλαμισμένων σκλάβων του Οθωμανικού χαρεμιού, που αποκλειστικός του σκοπός ήταν η ψυχαγωγία του ενός ιδιοκτήτη-αφέντη, ή εκείνη των έγκλειστων γυναικών της ανώτερης πυραμιδικής ιεραρχίας του χαρεμιού, οι Έλληνες και οι Ελληνίδες του Πόντου—και όχι μόνο— χόρευαν για τον εαυτό τους, και όχι για την ψυχαγωγία των αποκαλούμενων κοινωνικά ανωτέρων τους Οθωμανών Τούρκων. Σε αντίθεση με τα έθιμα των Οθωμανών, που οι άνδρες ποτέ δεν χόρευαν, οι Έλληνες και οι Ελληνίδες συμμετείχαν μαζί στη χορευτική διαδικασία. Η εργασία εξετάζει, επίσης, τις γυναικείες μουσικό-χορευτικές συγκεντρώσεις στα χαρέμια και την οπτική των δυτικών περιηγητριών για το χορό και τη μουσική των έγκλειστων στα χαρέμια εξισλαμισμένων σκλάβων.

Στη μελέτη αυτή διερευνώνται οι επιτόπιες μαρτυρίες περιηγητριών του 18^ου και 19^ου αιώνα οι οποίες αναφέρονται στις φυλετικές-χρωματικές διακρίσεις που επιβάλλονταν δια νόμου ή με άτυπες απαγορεύσεις στους Έλληνες, Αρμένιους και Εβραίους των οθωμανικών επικρατειών, σχετικά με τα χρώματα των ενδυμάτων και υποδημάτων τους, καθώς και των οικιών τους. Οι ιδιαίτερες αντιλήψεις των διαφόρων υποτελών λαών περί ενδυματολογικής αισθητικής, όχι μόνο δεν έβρισκαν εύφορο έδαφος ανέλιξης εντός του πλαισίου της οθωμανικής επικράτειας, αλλά οι ποικιλότροπες, προς αυτήν την κατεύθυνση, απαγορεύσεις των Οθωμανών καταδεικνύουν έντονα φαινόμενα και περιπτώσεις κοινωνικών διακρίσεων και ρατσισμού. Απαγόρευαν για παράδειγμα στους Έλληνες, στους Αρμένιους και στους Εβραίούς να φορούν το πράσινο χρώμα, επειδή θεωρούταν ιερό- το χρώμα του Προφήτη. Αναρίθμητες είναι και οι μαρτυρίες που αφορούν την χωροταξική διάκριση ή τη φυλετική διχοτόμηση σε πολλές περιοχές της Οθωμανικής επικράτειας.

Το ενδιαφέρον σε αυτή την εργασία επικεντρώνεται στις επιτόπιες μαρτυρίες της Αμερικανίδας περιηγήτριας Blanche Norton (1922) στη Μικρά Ασία και στον Πόντο που αναφέρεται «στην τιμωρία των Ελλήνων στις περιοχές της Μαύρης Θάλασσας για τις πράξεις των Ελλήνων στην Ευρώπη». Η περιηγήτρια-ιατρός αναφέρεται διεξοδικά στις βάναυσες ενέργειες του Οσμάν Αγά, δημάρχου της Κερασούντας, οι οποίες αποσκοπούσαν στον αφανισμό των Αρμενίων και των Ελλήνων. Τον αποκαλεί «Μάστιγα του Τρομερού Φόβου» που επιδιώκει τον αφανισμό όλων των στοιχείων που δεν είναι καθαροί Μουσουλμάνοι, στην Τραπεζούντα, στην Κερασούντα, στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, στο Καραχισάρ και στο Μπουλανκτζάκ.

Οι δυτικές περιηγήτριες του 18ου και 19ου αιώνα κατόρθωσαν κάτι που δεν μπόρεσε να καταφέρει κανένας περιηγητής, που έχει γράψει για το Οθωμανικό χαρέμι και για τη θέση της γυναίκας στο Ισλάμ. Διείσδυσαν και έζησαν οι ίδιες μέσα στα χαρέμια, και πολλές ήταν εκείνες που κατήγγειλαν τους περιηγητές για παραπληροφόρηση, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι οι περιγραφές τους βασίζονταν κυρίως στην αχαλίνωτη φαντασία τους, ξεκινώντας από την Lady Mary Wortley Montagu το 1717, η οποία υπήρξε η πρώτη περιηγήτρια που εισχώρησε μέσα σε αυτή την έμφυλη σφαίρα. Λανθασμένες είναι οι πληροφορίες των περιηγητών για τα "όργια" που διαδραματίζονταν στα χαρέμια και για τις χορεύτριες που ψυχαγωγούσαν το ανδρικό κοινό. Κανένας άνδρας, Μουσουλμάνος ή μη, δεν είχε το δικαίωμα να εισχωρήσει σε ένα χαρέμι, εκτός από τον Μουσουλμάνο ιδιοκτήτη-αφέντη του χαρεμιού. Όλες οι έγκλειστες γυναίκες ανήκαν μόνο σε έναν άνδρα και κανένας άλλος άνδρας δεν είχε δικαίωμα να τις δει, εκτός από τον πατέρα τους ή το πολύ στενό συγγενικό περιβάλλον. Όμως, στην περίπτωση των εξισλαμισμένων σκλάβων, που αποτελούσαν την πλειονότητα της πληθυσμιακής σύνθεσης των χαρεμιών, αυτό δεν υφίσταται, επειδή δεν υπήρχαν συγγενείς, δηλαδή πατέρας, αδέλφια... Το ανεξάντλητο υλικό των δυτικών περιηγητριών μας παρέχει, πέραν της πληθώρας πληροφοριών, συνομιλιών και επικοινωνιών, και μια ευρεία δυνατότητα αντίληψης της ταύτισης των περιηγητριών με το "άλλο". Η εικονικά κατασκευασμένη αθλήτρια, είδωλο της αμερικάνικης κουλτούρας, αποτελεί μία εικόνα της ιδανικής γυναίκας του 21^ου αιώνα που προωθείται συστηματικά στα ΜΜΕ. Εντούτοις, ένας κώδικας «θηλυκοποίησης» επισημαίνεται επανειλημμένα για να ουδετεροποιήσει το αποτέλεσμα της υπερβατικής της αθλητικής πράξης και της αθλητικής της ιδιότητας. Από την ανασκόπηση της βιβλιογραφίας περί έμφυλης πραγματικότητας και την επεξεργασία πρόσφατων συζητήσεων και ποσοτικών και ποιοτικών αναλύσεων περί έμφυλου υποκειμένου στον αθλητισμό, γίνεται φανερό ότι, πρώτον, η αθλήτρια απολαμβάνει, σε αντίθεση με το παρελθόν, μία έντονη, πανταχού και εκρηκτική παρουσία στα ΜΜΕ, ενώ ο γυναικείος αθλητισμός εξακολουθεί να προβάλλεται ελάχιστα. Δεύτερον, παρατηρείται μεγάλη ποσοστιαία και ποιοτική έλλειψη όχι μόνο στην κάλυψη του γυναικείου αθλητισμού, σε σύγκριση με τον ανδρικό αθλητισμό, αλλά και στην προβολή και απεικόνιση των αθλητριών στον ρόλο της αθλήτριας. Τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια, παρατηρείται σημαντική μείωση στην τηλεοπτική κάλυψη του γυναικείου αθλητισμού και αναδεικνύεται ότι το ποσοστό του τηλεοπτικού χρόνου που αφιερώνεται στον γυναικείο αθλητισμό στα προγράμματα των τοπικών ειδήσεων σήμερα είναι όσο χαμηλά ήταν πριν από 15 χρόνια. Τρίτον, παρατηρείται η αργή, αθόρυβη αλλά σταδιακή εμφάνιση μίας καινούργιας αθλητικής αισθητικής, δηλαδή η προβολή μίας άφυλης ρευστότητας στην αισθητική τους σώματος. Οι κωδικοί περί φύλων αναμιγνύονται με την προβολή των άφυλων αθλητών-αθλητριών, της θηλυκοποίησης του αθλητή και της αρσενικοποίησης της αθλήτρια. Εντοπίζονται ίσες ευκαιρίες στην εμπορευματοποίηση-μοντελοποίηση του σώματος της αθλήτριας και του αθλητή.

The School of Physical Education and Sport Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is participating in the ERASMUS+ collaborative partnership GEO LUDENS "Creating a tech tool to promote European Traditional Sports and Games (TSGs) from an intergenerational and inclusive perspective” http://geoludens.eu The European Commission has long acknowledged the important role of sport and physical education as a tool for socio-cultural inclusion-integration in and through sport, along with promoting public health, a healthy lifestyle and social well-being.      On May 30, 2018 a guided tour of the 19^th century neoclassical installations—the historic building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)— was provided to all the project participants: the coordinating university Fundacion Universidad San Jorge (FUSJ)/St. George University (Spain); the European Traditional Sports and Games Association- AEJeST (France); the Baranta Traditional Hungarian Martial Arts Association (Hungary). Nine new Champions for Peace are coming together for the International Day of Peace on 21 September to publicize the inspiring values of sport which have the capacity to push the boundaries of achievement, rise above poverty and exclusion, overcome marginalization and test the very limits of personal endurance.

As world-renowned athletes, we are aware that sport has been a great opportunity in our lives. It has given us a career and has enabled us to accomplish personal achievements both on and off the playing field. Beyond that, sport has provided us with a universal framework for learning values, helping us to develop skills to become more engaged and responsible citizens.

We also realize that our success in the sporting arena can serve to inspire children and youth throughout to the world. Our actions and words can be a vehicle for alleviating post-traumatic stress, delivering value-based education and training, and building more inclusive societies.

We firmly believe that sport is not limited to podiums, world records and high-cost equipment. It builds bridges between cultures, facilitates inclusion, promotes responsible citizenship and fosters the universal values of respect, tolerance, fair-play, discipline, and self-confidence. Even where facilities are poor or non-existent, sport can be a platform for creative expression by transforming basic materials found in local environments into sports equipment.

On this International Day of Peace, we want to express our commitment, spreading the message of sport as a springboard for social transformation. As Champions for Peace we try to be role-models and sources of inspiration for young people throughout the world. We believe in the importance of investing our time, mobilizing our networks, and sharing our experience to serve sport-based initiatives and field projects that tackle social issues.

In a global context deeply challenged by discrimination, exclusion and violence, we believe that sportsmen and women can help foster citizenship, spread solidarity and consolidate peace. Today is a good day to demonstrate that Champions are bred, not born. The values acquired along those long years of training are more than ever needed in order to nurture new generations.

I cannot think of a better way to empower boys and girls, women and men, from all groups in society, and to celebrate the full diversity of humankind. I wish you the best in your discussions”, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navi Pillay.

Key points:

There are no clear, universally applicable international laws to protect children and youth in the context of sport.

• There is a lack of uniform legislation all over the world: some nations do not even have definitions for child pornography or child exploitation, and provide no resources or training on how to deal with such serious issues.

• There is a fundamental lack of international cohesion; while there are some nations that have effective processes and procedures in place, other countries have nothing at all in place to tackle serious problems.

• Exploitation, trafficking, and abandonment calls for stricter licensing of agents and trainers.

• There is a clear need for international standards, and a universal code of ethics, for educating policy makers, developing screening and training for volunteers, instituting background checks and child protection training for coaches as well as other personnel …

Everyone recognised the crucial importance to mobilise for sport security and integrity. Everyone and everything can help create a remarkable cocktail which has not existed before, at least in this combination: Art, athletes, civil society, religion, everything makes sense in a joint venture.

There were about 40 entities represented here, and more than 140 participants, and what could be sensed was the clear feeling of responsibility, of collective responsibility. We need to mobilise, and this cannot be done by any one of us, including the most global organisation relating to sport, the IOC, hence the need for this collective responsibility.

How best can we manifest this responsibility? We heard a remarkable panel, the last one in particular, everyone was very good, but this one was also shocking, and it touched on important issues. Clearly its focus on children and youth is important, also because we are touching the beginning of life. The danger that these threats present is not only a sports issue, but also a direct threat to the integrity and fundamental human rights, of all of us, and must be tackled with utmost conviction…

Dr. Irene Kamberidou (BA, MA, PhD) is an Asst. Professor of Sociology and Gender Issues at the University of Athens, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Science (http://www.phed.uoa.gr) where she teaches the undergraduate courses Principles of Sociology (2003-2014), Gender issues and Sport (2006-2014), Olympism: a Sociological Approach (2009-2010).  She has also been teaching in the Faculty's Sport Sociology Graduate program  (2011-2014). She received her BA and MA from Emmanuel College and Boston College respectively, Boston, Massachusetts, USA and her PhD from the Sociology Department of the Panteios University of Social and Political Sciences in Athens, Greece. Dr. Kamberidou also studied at the la Sorbonne de l'Université Paris (Paris IV)–dedicated to Literature, Civilizations, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Kamberidou is the Greek representative of the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW) and currently going through the application procedures for membership in the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE/CIEPSS). She is also a member of  Sport & EU, the Panhellenic Union for the Promotion of Women in Sports (PEPGAS), the International Sport for Development and Peace Association Platform (ISDPA), the European Sports Development Network (ESDN), as well as a member of the Executive Committee of the ECWT- European Centre for Women and Technology (http://www.womenandtechnology.eu, email: irene.kamberidou@womenandtechnology.eu. CONSUMER RESPONSES TO CORRUPTION AND TRANSGRESSION IN SPORT

A business research project examining consumer attitudes towards and behaviour in response to corruption (e.g. match-fixing, vote-rigging etc.) and/or transgression (e.g. anti-social behaviour etc.) in sport.

AHRC-funded PhD studentship:

An oral history of England international rugby union players 1945-1995.

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship at the International Centre for Sports History & Culture, De Montfort University, Leicester, working in collaboration with the World Rugby Museum, Twickenham.

The studentship starts in October 2013 and includes tuition fees and a full maintenance grant from the AHRC. The World Rugby Museum will also provide £1000 per year to help fund travel, research expenses and conference costs.

The project will be supervised by Professor Tony Collins (De Montfort University) and Mr Michael Rowe (Curator of the World Rugby Museum).

Scope of the project

British society changed significantly between 1945 and 1995 and this was sharply reflected by rugby union, which evolved from an amateur game to a professional sport during this period. This project aims to explore those changes through an oral history of England international players.

Backed by the considerable resources of the archives of the World Rugby Museum, the student will interview former England internationals to explore and answer a range of questions. The project will investigate the daily lives of elite amateur athletes, examine how rugby was played and its underpinning attitudes, and explore the relationship between rugby and social, business and career networks. The project will also ask to what extent rugby players' experiences reflected broader attitudes and practices within Britain during this period, for example, by comparing the changes taking place in rugby with those in business and broader social life. Central to the project will be the issues of class and masculinity.

The project will offer not merely an extensive history of a major British sport during a period of tremendous change, but also a unique window into the changing values and mores of young middle-class Englishmen in the second half of the twentieth century.

How to apply

The studentship is open to UK or EU citizens who satisfy AHRC academic and residency criteria. EU candidates are normally eligible only for a fees-only award. Applicants should hold a first or upper second class degree, and hold or be studying for a Masters’ degree in a relevant area of history.

Applicants should submit a short curriculum vitae and a brief letter outlining reasons for interest in the studentship and qualifications for it. The names and contact details of two academic referees should also be supplied. Applications should be sent to Professor Tony Collins at tcollins@dmu.ac.uk

The deadline is 28 June. Interviews will be held on 11 July at the Twickenham Stadium, Twickenham TW2 7BA.

Organized by: Centre for Women's Studies, University of York

We invite all postgraduate and early career researchers interested in gendered aspects of sport to a one-day interdisciplinary conference.

This is a growing academic field which addresses important questions about equality, public health, representation, participation, citizenship and ‘fair play.’ With the Olympics in the UK, and a likely glut of related journalism, 2012 is an opportune time to investigate the framing of media relationships between sport and gender.

The conference will be interdisciplinary, and welcomes contributions from many fields in order to foster understanding of, and promote relationships between a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives. We also intend to celebrate the achievements of women in sport, and this conference will be part of the marking International Women’s Day.

The aims of this event are to:

Demonstrate and enrich the depth of study in this field.

Bring together academics, activists and others working on sport, gender and media.

The focus of the Conference is the relationship of media to sport and gender; however, papers addressing sports issues which underpin and inform this field will be considered. Topics might consider any of the following (but not limited to this list):

FEMINISM IN THE NEWS: REPRESENTATIONS OF THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT SINCE THE 1960S

Feminism in the News is a detailed exploration of how the women's movement, its
members, and their goals were represented in eight British and American newspapers
between 1968 and 2008 – a period covering the height of the Second Wave, and a more
contemporary Third Wave. Examining over 1100 news articles, the book analyses the
nuanced ways feminism has historically been supported, marginalized and debated in
the mainstream press. Mendes asks questions such as: How have feminists and the
women's movement been historically represented over time and space? What problems
and solutions have been provided regarding women's subordinate position in society?
Who has the power to frame feminism and how do they do it? What is feminism seen to
be fighting for today? In addition to tracing coverage over a forty year period,
this book raises questions about the future of feminism, and what journalists and
activists can do to help reclaim the F-Word.
