During your translation test tomorrow, you will be asked to translate a short text from English into Greek and summarise it for instructional purposes in a crisis scenario.

In terms of preparation, the only thing you can do is collect all your health and travel resources (terminology databases, corpora, websites).

After checking your drafts, I have make the following notes for you:

1. When using in-text citations, you do not have to add "p." or "page" and then the page number. You can simply have the page number.

2. If you are using the Harvars the MLA or the APA referencing system, that is fine by me. The only thing you need to remember is to be consistent throughout the essay.

3. WORDS: Please note that the instruction was to write an essay of approximately 1,500 words. Please do not exceed 2,000 words because that is going to be unfair to those who have struggled to filter what information to include and those who have struggled to find enough valid information to reach 1,500. So roughly, your essay cannot be less than 1,000 and cannot exceed 2,000 words.

All the best,

Also, please note that it is preferrable to use a combination of in-class and published material. You have plently of them in the presentations and as weekly reading.

Please note that the Department informed me that you have been taught to produce your quotes and bibliography applying the MLA style. An easy guide to that can be found here:

https://www.mendeley.com/guides/mla-citation-guide

In short, the process is the following:

In-text citations

Use the first element from the Works Cited entry - usually the author’s surname - and page number/s in parenthesis, e.g. (Smith 173). If the author’s name appears in the body of your essay itself, use just the relevant page number/s in the parenthesis, e.g. Smith claims that....applies. (173). There is no punctuation between the author's name and the page number/s.

Works Cited

Works Cited is a list of sources from which you have borrowed information or ideas. You need to acknowledge – or cite – all your sources.

Arrange the works in alphabetical order by the first element, usually the author’s surname. The elements of each entry, including the formatting and punctuation, are as follows. Omit any element which is not relevant. Format the second and subsequent lines of each entry with a hanging indent.

NB The alphabetical arrangement is letter-by-letter, i.e. Mac comes before Mc. Ignore any diacritical marks (e.g. é is treated the same as e) or special characters (e.g. for @smith use smith).

Author. Title of source. Title of container, Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location.

Following a lot (and I mean a lot) of requests to look at essay drafts, I have come up with a plan!

Please do send me your drafts if you want me to take a quick look but MAKE SURE you ask specific questions in the form of comments on your drafts because I will not have the time to read all of them in detail.

The deadline for that is Friday evening, so I can check them over the weekend.

To send me a draft, please use the relevant section under Assignments on e-class.

I hope this helps :)

Dr. Denise Filmer (University of Pisa)

Chair: Dr. Emmanouela Patiniotaki & Dr. Effrossyni Fragkou

Federico M. Federici is a Professor in Intercultural Crisis Communication at the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London, UK. His research focuses on the role of translators and translation in crises, and on online news translation. Federico was member of the EU-funded INTERACT Crisis Translation Network (2017-2020) led by Sharon O’Brien (Dublin City University) with whom he is developing cross-disciplinary projects in Crisis Translation. More information about his work can be found here: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0057-0340. Federico's talk will pivot around the premises that translation can be a tool for risk reduction. Be it written, oral, signed, or multimodal, rendering crucial information into a language that at-risk population can understand and circulating it in formats that are accessible are crucial activities in crisis communication. They become extremely important when we consider language in relation to health risks. For these reasons, the talk will argue that there is an urgent need to ensure lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic will help us consolidate the consideration for language as one of social determinants of health. Considering language as one of the social determinants of health means considering levels of literacy and multilingualism within affected communities when planning preventative measures to reduce health risks.

Denise Filmer is a research fellow in the Department of Philology, Literature, and Linguistics at the University of Pisa, where she also teaches ESP in the Department of Political Science. She holds a PhD in Translation Studies (Durham University UK). Her research focuses on ideology in translation, political discourse, journalistic translation, audiovisual translation, gender and sexuality in media discourse, intercultural mediation, and cross-cultural pragmatics. She is the author of two monographs: Translating Racial Slurs: last linguistic taboo and translational dilemma (Lambert Academic Publishing), and Italy's Politicians in the news: journalistic translation and cultural representation (Odoya). She has published in leading international journals including Cultus: International Journal of Intercultural Communication and Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice, and in collective research volumes with international publishers such as Routledge and Benjamins. She serves as a reviewer for several international journals and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Cambridge Scholars. The seminar tackles the importance of planned and policy-protected communication in multilingual settings, especially during human crisis and while preparing and responding to crisis.

Due to participation in a ministerial discussion for the Greek government which seems to be taking longer than expected, I am forced to move our session to Thursday 13/05 same time, i.e. 3 pm.

Please make a note on your calendar and in the meantime, go through my comments for your drafts, which I will upload today. Make sure you check them carefully so we can have a fruitful discussion on Thursday.

This module is assessed in two phases. The first one is a group project on policy assessment and the second is a practical exam. We have already carried out relevant tasks on both. With the completion of the discussion on a couple of translations and some tasks on policy analysis and evaluation, the project instructions will be released on Monday 05/04 and the deadline will be 19/04.

As part of the evaluation, you will need to work in groups. Although each one of you will work on a separate section, all members will need to decide on the approach of the evaluation, the focal areas and who will work on what. You will also need to agree on an introduction and a conclusion for the group essay.

You will find a form under the relevant section where you can add your names and which group you want to belong to. Groups will consist of four people and will discuss four focal areas of each policy. Please feel free to start building your groups.
