The 4th ACM Europe Summer School in Data Science | Towards building the Data Science Stack

ACM, the ACM Europe Council, and the "Athena" Research and Innovation Center invites students to the 4th ACM Europe Summer School in Data Science.

The school will take place in Athens in July 10th-14th, 2023. Students will have the opportunity to attend keynote lectures and multi-lecture courses by distinguished academics and researchers on several forms of data analytics and machine learning addressing different layers of a data science stack, including the interplay between advanced data processing and machine learning, graph data engines, spatial data analytics, and misinformation detection. Keynote lectures by major figures in the field will also be given at key points of the program.

The School is addressed to early-stage researchers, such as graduate (MSc and PhD) students, postdocs, early-career faculty, and other academic and industrial researchers interested in the diverse field of Data Science. Advanced undergraduate students with the appropriate background will be considered as well.

All courses will take place in the Royal Olympic Hotel, which is in front of the famous Temple of Zeus and National Garden, underneath the Acropolis.

An interesting and stimulating social program will take advantage of the historical and cultural identity of Athens and complement the technical program of the School.

Pat Hanrahan is the CANON Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. His current research involves graphics systems and architectures, hardware design tools, programming languages, image synthesis, and visualization. Early in his career, Pat worked at Pixar where he developed software for volume rendering and was the chief architect of the RenderMan(TM) Interface - a protocol that allows modeling programs to describe scenes to high quality rendering programs. He founded PeakStream, BeBop, and Tableau, and has served on multiple technical advisory boards. Pat has received three Academy Awards for Science and Technology, the Spirit of America Creativity Award, the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, the SIGGRAPH Stephen A. Coons Award, and the IEEE Visualization Career Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2019, he shared the ACM A.M. Turing Award with Ed Catmull.

Tamara Munzner, Professor of Computer Science, University of British Columbia
Tamara Munzner is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia and holds a PhD from Stanford. She has been active in visualization research since 1991, has published over eighty papers, and co-chaired InfoVis and EuroVis. Her book Visualization Analysis and Design appeared in 2014, and she received the IEEE VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award in 2015. She is co-editor of the AK Peters Visualization book series from CRC/Routledge. She has worked on problem-driven visualization in many domains ranging from genomic to e-commerce to journalism. Her technique-driven visualization interests include graph drawing and dimensionality reduction. Her evaluation interests include controlled experiments in a laboratory setting and qualitative studies in the field.

Ρούσσου), έχει σχεδιαστεί μια εφαρμογή Εικονικής Πραγματικότητας που δίνει τη δυνατότητα ”χαρτογράφησης” του φυσικού χώρου στην εικονική πραγματικότητα, σε κλίμακα 1:1 ούτως ώστε μετέπειτα να χρησιμοποιηθεί σε ένα εύρος εφαρμογών όπως σενάρια εκπαίδευσης, διακόσμησης χώρων, παιχνιδιών κ.ά.

The Greek Chapter of the ACM-W (ACM’s Council on Women in Computing) is organizing a winter school to be held annually. The main goal of the school is to offer the opportunity to young computer science professionals to learn about timely topics from top scientists from around the world.

The topic of the inaugural edition is “Fairness on AI” and will take place online on February 24-25, 2022.

We live the revolution of AI. Enormous opportunities are ahead but come with dangers. AI-driven systems are increasingly being used in all aspects of society to assist, or even replace human decision making. Can we trust such systems? Every day, we use search, recommendations, personal assistants, the web, and social media to help us in all sorts of decisions from where to dine and what movie to watch, to more fundamental ones, such as our stance on political issues and worldwide events. AI is being widely used by public and private bodies to assist decisions in courts, in college admissions, and job recruitment. Issues of biased treatment, exclusion, and unfairness are raised, with concerns exaggerated by various cases catching the public attention.

In this winter school, well-renowned leaders in the field will present the exciting on-going work on addressing such concerns. The school will include seminars, talks, small working group sessions, and a panel.

We invite applications from senior undergraduate, graduate and PhD students, early-stage researchers and professionals.

The school is open to participants from any country and of any nationality. The official language of the school is English. Basic knowledge of computer science is also a prerequisite.

Participation is free but will be limited to foster interactions. Selection will be based on the academic and professional merit of the candidates together with their motivation for participating. Applicants will be informed about the outcome of the selection process through email.

Upon completion of the school, all attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.

To CHIGreece 2021 αποτελεί το πρώτο συνέδριο με θέμα την Αλληλεπίδραση Ανθρώπου - Η/Υ και διοργανώνεται από την Ελληνική Ομάδα Εργασίας της ACM (Greek ACM SIGCHI).

Στο συνέδριο θα συμμετέχουν καταξιωμένοι Έλληνες και διεθνείς εισηγητές τόσο από την ακαδημαϊκή κοινότητα όσο και από τον κόσμο των επιχειρήσεων, που θα παρουσιάσουν μεταξύ άλλων τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις στο χώρο του σχεδιασμού αλληλεπιδραστικών συστημάτων, της ευχρηστίας και των ευφυών διεπαφών.

Το θέμα του συνεδρίου είναι «Connecting the Community», με στόχο να γίνει το ετήσιο σημείο συνάντησης που θα φέρνει κοντά όλους όσοι ασχολούνται με την χρηστοκεντρική σχεδίαση, ανάπτυξη και αξιολόγηση διαδραστικών συστημάτων με στόχο τη βελτίωση της ευχρηστίας και της προσβασιμότητας των συστημάτων αυτών, την εργονομία των προϊόντων, καθώς και τους νέους ερευνητές που θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να παρουσιάσουν τη δουλειά τους σε ένα συνέδριο διεθνούς εμβέλειας.

Abstract: Disease-associated variants lie primarily in non-coding regions, increasing the urgency of understanding how gene-regulatory circuitry impacts human disease. To address this challenge, we generate comparative genomics, epigenomic, and transcriptional maps, spanning 823 human tissues, 1500 individuals, and 20 million single cells. We link variants to target genes, upstream regulators, cell types of action, and perturbed pathways, and predict causal genes and regions to provide unbiased views of disease mechanisms, sometimes re-shaping our understanding. We find that Alzheimer’s variants act primarily through immune processes, rather than neuronal processes, and the strongest genetic association with obesity acts via energy storage/dissipation rather than appetite/exercise decisions. We combine single-cell profiles, tissue-level variation, and genetic variation across healthy and diseased individuals to map genetic effects into epigenomic, transcriptional, and function changes at single-cell resolution, to recognize cell-type-specific disease-associated somatic mutations indicative of mosaicism, and to recognize multi-tissue single-cell effects of exercise and obesity. We expand these methods to electronic health records to recognize multi-phenotype effects of genetics, environment, and disease, combining clinical notes, lab tests, and diverse data modalities despite missing data. We integrate large cohorts to factorize phenotype-genotype correlations to reveal distinct biological contributors of complex diseases and traits, to partition disease complexity, and to stratify patients for pathway-matched treatments. Lastly, we develop massively-parallel, programmable and modular technologies for manipulating these pathways by high-throughput reporter assays, genome editing, and gene targeting in human cells and mice, to propose new therapeutic hypotheses in Alzheimer’s, obesity, and cancer. These results provide a roadmap for translating genetic findings into mechanistic insights and ultimately new therapeutic avenues for complex disease and cancer.

Bio: Manolis Kellis is a professor of computer science at MIT, a member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, a principal investigator of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT, and head of the MIT Computational Biology Group (compbio.mit.edu). His research includes disease circuitry, genetics, genomics, epigenomics, coding genes, non-coding RNAs, regulatory genomics, and comparative genomics, applied to Alzheimer's Disease, Obesity, Schizophrenia, Cardiac Disorders, Cancer, and Immune Disorders, and multiple other disorders. He has led several large-scale genomics projects, including the Roadmap Epigenomics project, the ENCODE project, the Genotype Tissue-Expression (GTEx) project, and comparative genomics projects in mammals, flies, and yeasts. He received the US Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (PECASE) by US President Barack Obama, the Mendel Medal for Outstanding Achievements in Science, the NSF CAREER award, the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the Technology Review TR35 recognition, the AIT Niki Award, and the Sprowls award for the best Ph.D. thesis in computer science at MIT. He has authored over 240 journal publications cited more than 120,000 times. He has obtained more than 20 multi-year grants from the NIH, and his trainees hold faculty positions at Stanford, Harvard, CMU, McGill, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, and other top universities. He lived in Greece and France before moving to the US, and he studied and conducted research at MIT, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, and the Cold Spring Harbor Lab. Καλησπέρα σας,

σας προωθώ μια πρόσκληση για τη συμμετοχή σας σε πείραμα Εικονικής Πραγματικότητας στο Τμήμα Πληροφορικής & Τηλεπικοινωνιών (για τις ημέρες μετά τις αυριανές παρουσιάσεις του μαθήματός μας, προφανώς ;-) ):

Στο πλαίσιο της πτυχιακής εργασίας του προπτυχιακού φοιτητή κ. Γιώργου Γκάνια (επιβλέπων Ι. Ιωαννίδης), έχει σχεδιαστεί ένα πείραμα για συστήματα Εικονικής Πραγματικότητας (Virtual Reality) που διεξάγεται στο Τμήμα Πληροφορικής και Τηλεπικοινωνιών του ΕΚΠΑ, γραφείο Ι20, από Δευτέρα 05-07-21 μέχρι και Παρασκευή 16-07-21.

Σας προσκαλούμε να συμμετάσχετε ως χρήστες στο πείραμα!

Το πείραμα περιληπτικά εξετάζει το πως επηρεάζεται η απόδοση, η αίσθηση ελέγχου, καθώς και η αίσθηση "ιδιοκτησίας" του χρήστη ενός εικονικού περιβάλλοντος, ανάλογα με τον τρόπο που ο χρήστης κρατάει τα αντικείμενα. Θα σας ζητηθεί να φορέσετε μια κάσκα εικονικής πραγματικότητας (HTC Vive) και να εκτελέσετε κάποιες απλές εργασίες (όπως την επιλογή και μετακίνηση ενός κύβου σε μια συγκεκριμένη θέση). Ύστερα θα σας ζητήσουμε να απαντήσετε σε μερικές ερωτήσεις σχετικά με την εμπειρία σας. Ο συνολικός χρόνος που θα χρειαστεί να διαθέσετε είναι περίπου 60 λεπτά.

Σημειώνεται ότι για λόγους προστασίας από τον COVID-19, παίρνουμε όλα τα απαραίτητα μέτρα προφύλαξης. Το Ερευνητικό Κέντρο “Αθηνά” διοργανώνει διαδικτυακό τριήμερο παρουσιάσεων και δημιουργικού διαλόγου γύρω από τα αποτελέσματα έργων της Πρόσκλησης 031 του ΕΠΑΝΕΚ 2014-2020, «Δράση στρατηγικής ανάπτυξης ερευνητικών και τεχνολογικών φορέων». Τρεις ημέρες πλούσιες σε επιτεύγματα ερευνητικών δράσεων, καινοτόμες τεχνολογίες στα Μεγάλα Δεδομένα, το Βιομηχανικό Διαδίκτυο των Πραγμάτων, την Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη, τη Γλωσσική Τεχνολογία, τεχνολογικές λύσεις στον Πολιτισμό, με πλήθος σχετικών εφαρμογών, που θα κρατήσουν το ενδιαφέρον αμείωτο.

Ταυτόχρονα, ομάδες επιστημόνων, ερευνητών, φοιτητών διαφόρων κλάδων, ενδεικτικά πληροφορικής, βιβλιοθηκονομίας, Επικοινωνίας και ΜΜΕ/δημοσιογραφίας προσκαλούνται να λάβουν μέρος στο Datathon που θα διεξαχθεί, με προκλήσεις – προβλήματα που έχουν προκύψει κατά την υλοποίηση των έργων και προσφέρονται για περαιτέρω αξιοποίηση και διερεύνηση λύσεων.

In the Visualization and MultiMedia Lab of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Zürich, there is a new open position for a research assistant in the PhD program in computer science with a focus on interactive visualization and analysis of large audio-visual movie archives data.

The project requires strong interest not only in visualization and graphics, algorithms and data structures, but also in data processing methods. Furthermore, good software programming skills are required as well as a strong willingness and ability to learn new mathematical methods. The ability to work with and extend existing software frameworks or 3rd-party code is highly recommended. Good C++, Python, Matlab skills are needed as well as experience programming visualization or graphics apps.

Qualifications: A Master degree in computer science or closely related field with a strong CS component from an inter- nationally recognized research university is required to enter the PhD program. A prior focus on visualization or computer graphics, as well as good math skills and experience in programming are also required.

The 3rd Summit on Gender Equality in Computing (GEC 2021), organized by the Greek ACM-W Chapter, will take place online on July 2, 2021.

The Summit aims at promoting gender-equal access to the computer-related scientific frontiers, encouraging and educating women and men in an equal way to achieve their goals and utilize their potential in digital professions. The goal of the Summit is also to celebrate and disseminate the achievements of computer professionals in a fair and gender-equal way.

The program will feature keynote talks, posters, a panel, and a workshop.

Registration is free but required. Information about access to join the virtual conference will be provided to registered participants a few days before the Summit.

Description:

Data growth and availability as well as data democratization have radically changed data exploration. Many different data sets, generated by users, systems and sensors, are continuously being collected. These data sets contain information about scientific experiments, health, energy, education etc., and they are highly heterogeneous in nature, ranging from highly structured data in tabular form to unstructured text, images or videos. While the benefit of data exploration becomes increasingly more prominent, the limitations of existing tools make accessing and combining data from different data sources a non-trivial, time-consuming, and often fruitless endeavor. In this round table, we will discuss about what it takes to bridge the gap between users and data, and the new generation of intelligent data exploration tools that are emerging at the intersection of data management, natural language processing, machine learning and visualization.
